Summer Retreat Paget Island | June 13-16 2014

The Retreat Program is now in its fourth year and has met and surpassed its purpose to bring people together to connect, to learn and to have fun while appreciating the epic beauty of Bermuda.
Past participants have had beautiful experiences making lifelong friends, learning new skills through workshops that range from Still Life Drawing and African Mask Making to Financial Planning and Song Writing, Salsa Dance and more!
All manner of folk are invited to attend; if you are a person who likes to tell stories, dance, play dominoes, swim, paint or pontificate on aspects of life with others, the Retreat is for you! In addition to the Workshops, there is free time to reflect and to get inspired by the beautiful surroundings, activities such as Hair Braiding, Bocce (Chewstick’s official game), Hiking, Fishing (provide own equipment) and the Retreat Fireside where participants are encouraged to share a new skill, story, poem, song or anecdote and everyone gets to participate in the always fun, sing along vibe.
The Standard VERY IMPORTANT Information
Break-out Sessions are 1.5-3 hour workshops that offer insight into a variety of fields that help participants to deepen personally and collectively. They are led by passionate people that want to share their fields of expertise and personal experience in a safe and organic environment. All attendees are invited (though not required) to submit a Break-out Session option for consideration, and everyone who attends is expected to bring a passion for learning and sharing. There are 3 Break-Out Sessions scheduled for each Retreat, with up to 12 options to choose from.
We don’t know who will attend well in advance, so it is difficult to let you know what each Retreat will offer specifically, but if you’d like to lead a session include a brief description in the sign up form, we will let you know as soon as possible if yours has been accepted (there’s a discount for facilitators). Some useful information is below:
What do Participants Need to Bring?
The Retreats alternate between Ports Island and Paget Island, two of the most beautiful and fully equipped islands in Bermuda. We are proud to be able to offer the opportunity for young people ages 6-18 to be able to attend and participate. The youngest will be taken care of by a child care provider away from the different workshops, while those willing and able to participate in deepening activities will be allowed to. Those under 18 will be required to get parental consent as well as an over 18 chaperone. If a chaperone cannot be identified we would be willing to ask other mature attendees if one would be able to be a personal chaperone for you. Please inquire well in advance if you will be bringing a child or if you need a chaperone.
Space is limited for this special event and we are inviting participants to take part in a journey along with roughly 50 participants for this tremendous, life-changing personal adventure. Participants will depart from King’s Wharf (behind St. George’s Visitor Center) on Friday evening at 6pm and return to the mainland on Monday afternoon at 3pm. Beachfest Crown Song Competition REGISTRATION OPEN
This summer, PRS For Music, the music rights organization, and The Chewstick Foundation will present the Beachfest Crown Song Competition, along with media partners Vibe103 and Channel82. The Beachfest Crown Song Competition will provide the opportunity for both amateur and professional Bermudian and Resident artists to compete to see who can make the number 1 hit of the summer! Artists who enter The Beachfest Crown Song Competition will have the chance to win an impressive $10,000 prize package ($5000 cash, $3000 music video by Burnt House Productions and more).
Song Submissions will be accepted from Friday, June 6th 2014 until Friday, June 27th 2014, by submitting your song information and hit tune below, after which there will be three stages of the Song Competition evaluation process. Stage 1 will see all entrants that meet the criteria posted on the Beachfest YouTube Channel where view counts will determine the top 10 songs in the competition. Stage 2 sees the top ten songs get rotation on Vibe103FM and be featured in a televised special on Channel82, all designed to boost text votes for your favorite song or artist. Stage 3 will see the top 5 most voted songs/artists make it to the stage at Beachfest to perform their hit song before a panel of music industry professionals and the Beachfest audience.
To enter the Beachfest Crown Song Competition applicants must be a Bermuda resident and submit a 100% original song, 3-4minutes long, radio friendly and above 90bpm (beats per minute). As this is a competition designed to support local artists and grow cultural appreciation, songs that cover themes such as Bermuda, Emancipation, and/or Summer will be more competitive. The entry fee for the competition is $25 with a maximum submission of two songs per artist, and all songs that meet the criteria will make it into Stage 1.
The Chewstick Foundation mission is to empower storytelling, creative expression and social justice, to enrich youth, arts, culture and community; it has become an epicentre of local musical and artistic talent and hopes this contest will not only promote togetherness and support of Bermudian artists, but will also continue to encourage the recognition of Bermuda’s history and authentic culture.
The Chewstick Foundation is pleased to partner with international sponsor PRS For Music, Europe’s music rights management organization, to enable this competition to take place and to help bring more awareness about artist rights and how recording artists can get compensation for their work. Chewstick is also excited to partner for the first time with Vibe103 who are just as excited about the potential this Song Competition has for developing the local music scene. Channel82 has been a longtime partner of The Chewstick Foundation and are committed to giving this event and competitors as much exposure as they can, including the Stage 2 showcase and broadcasting the finals.

Help build the float, have a drink, wild out to good music, paint, glue, staple and more. Stop by the lounge early Saturday evening (about 5pm), or join Haile (and crew) in the parking lot from about 10am, ready to turn up and make it happen! Following the parade on Monday, May 26th from 6pm until 1am, Court Street will be a vibrant hub of music, enterprise and camaraderie as The Chewstick Foundation, The Economic Empowerment Zone Agency (EEZA) and the Bermuda Economic Development Corporation host the Bermuda Day Bakatown Block Party, with support from The Corporation of Hamilton.
This free event will highlight dj’s, vendors and area businesses. The Bermuda Bakatown Block Party will breathe new life into the tradition of residents, businesses and parade revelers settling in on Court Street to not only celebrate the cultural heritage of Bermuda but to enjoy and appreciate the value of the North Hamilton area, its people and its history.
Chewstick Foundation Executive Director Gavin Djata Smith says “back in the day, when the Parade ended at Bernard’s Park, this was the people’s tradition, and was built on DJ’s like Playbwoy, SouljahOne, Genesis and others. We aim to build on that heritage and develop this into a more comprehensive event in years to come because events like these bring people together and help to heal Bermuda.”
We’d like to see some of the floats from the Bermuda Day Parade come by to enhance the atmosphere. If any floats would like to be added please contact The Chewstick Foundation in advance to arrange security access and parking. The Bermuda Police Service will be on hand to ensure the safety and security of the event.
