Bermuda’s Good Friday KiteFest
The Bermuda Good Friday KiteFest (KiteFest) has spanned more than 4 decades as an integral part of the Bermuda cultural calendar enjoyed by Bermudians and visitors alike. KiteFest has managed to carve out a niche as a fun, traditional family event that is eagerly anticipated on the annual calendar. KiteFest brings together people from all walks of life to celebrate Bermuda’s Easter cultural traditions and has become an event that island visitors flock toward to not only see Bermuda culture but experience it with Bermudians.
Taking place on the Good Friday Holiday on the pristine Horseshoe Bay Beach in Southampton, KiteFest is a fun-filled day full of activities, entertainment, creativity and natural beauty. Centered around the iconic Bermuda Kite, attendees flock to Horseshoe Bay to show-off, test, and view homemade creations that take to the skies filling the air with the signature “hum” that Bermuda Kite’s are world-renowned for. If guests did not bring their own Kite, they can choose to purchase one at the event or even participate in a Kite Making workshop to learn how to make their own Bermuda Kite as a souvenir!
KiteFest is full of fun activities for guests of all ages including historic games such as marbles, egg & spoon and wheelbarrow races as well as everyones favorite, the KiteFest Easter Egg Hunt. Prizes are awarded in a variety of categories to ensure everyone walks away a winner.
The festive energy is maintained throughout the day with a wide array of Bermudian talent performing on stage, with plenty of opportunity for visitors to participate if they wish to perform! Breaks are filled by DJs, games and prizes, keeping the fun going all day.
For nature lover’s, KiteFest takes place on Horseshoe Bay Beach, which recently won the Traveller’s Choice Award for 8th Most Beautiful Beach in the World by Trip Advisor (www.tripadvisor.com).
For the foodie, KiteFest has an annual Codfish Cake Competition as well as a Hot Cross Bun Competition – celebrating two of Bermuda’s iconic Easter treats.
Although other Good Friday events are hosted across the island, KiteFest is unique:
-
held on Bermuda’s premier beach, Horseshoe Bay
-
features live local entertainment
-
has special workshops and activities geared towards visitors
-
is building up an international outreach campaign
The potential to increase the reach of KiteFest is huge, as there are only a handful of similar events in the Caribbean, combined with the fact that the Bermuda Kite is known around the world.
We wish to increase the quality, infrastructure and scale of KiteFest in order to increase awareness of Bermuda and her rich cultural traditions, both locally and internationally. KiteFest is a great opportunity for a signature event in the shoulder season that can attract awareness, attendance and participation from each of our gateway cities.
