Danya Steele – How will you design your life?
In our commitment to breaking down social barriers, celebrating storytelling and empowering individuals to deepen on many levels, we have invited author, community activist, and entrepreneur, Danya Steele, to share insights with Bermuda students, facilitate a workshop at their Winter Retreat and lead a discussion in partnership with the Women’s Resource Center.
Danya Steele’s work is committed to bettering the world through youth development, media, and inspiring people to take on their own destinies. Her work focuses heavily on storytelling and chronicling experiences to empower future generations. She is currently writing a book which highlights emerging young leaders who are changing South Africa in the post-apartheid era. She left a very comfortable job in 2009 to do this because she felt these were stories that needed to be told. Danya Steele is committed to mutual empowerment and to encouraging self-reflection in order to live with purpose.
We have organized a few events so that Ms. Steele’s influence achieves maximum positive impact. She has a wealth of experience in heading non-profits focused on Youth Empowerment. Her approach is always interactive and inspirational; at 27 years old she has already made her mark on the globe and has a passion for helping others to do so as well. Ms. Steele’s work strives to promote understanding of diverse cultures by encouraging self-reflective living and sharing.
This is our first venture in having an international facilitator as part of their highly successful Retreat program, and will be an ideal opportunity for personal and mutual growth and collaboration across geographical lines. The 2012 Winter Retreat promises to be the best ever, as we are encouraging participants to unplug from the hustle and bustle of the daily grind and to reconnect with themselves. Participants will be encouraged to share individual gifts & passions, learn about conscious living and cultivate their own personal story and destiny. Along with Ms. Steele’s workshop there will be workshops on African drumming, song-writing, yoga, fitness, guitar, demonstrations on head wrapping, healthy cooking, time for self-reflection, and more.

What I am mostly interested in is inspiring people to think about how their lives are going and how to make that work for them no matter what they may view as current obstacles or circumstances. I would highlight all of the many tools we all have at our fingertips to manifest dreams and make things happen. This talk applies to literally anyone, and can be tweaked according to the audience (whether it’s youth or women). I would come with a presentation and some interactive exercises to get people thinking about themselves and their own lives. – Danya Steele
We invite you to attend any one of the events listed above or sign up for the Winter Retreat on www.chewstick.org, the price breakdown for members, non-members, youth, and families are included in the article here. Alternatively sign-ups can be made by phone on 292-2439 or by e-mailing your information to info@chewstick.org.

2012 Chewstick Retreats… Sign-Up TODAY!
Anyone that has experienced The Chewstick Foundation’s Retreats knows that this program is nothing short of life-changing. Originally conceptualized as an annual event, the Retreats have quickly become a staple of the Chewstick Foundation’s programs designed to break down barriers and empower individuals to re-engage with themselves and connect with one another on a whole new level. We successfully held three Retreat weekends in 2011 and will continue into 2012 and beyond.
The 2012 Retreats will be: WINTER – February 17th to 19th, SUMMER – June 29th to July 1st , and FALL – October 5th to 7th.
Retreats feature participant-led workshops, collaborations, group activities and quiet time dedicated to enhancing the overall process of personal and collective growth. Despite what you may think, everyone is creative in some way, including and especially YOU! No matter your area of interest or skill level all are welcome and encouraged to participate, no experience necessary. Participants leave with new, deep, personal relationships and continue their collaborations and creative growth well beyond the focused weekends.
On each Retreat will utilise a “Bredren” system, which serves to enhance the experience by partnering participants up to create a personal bond and encourage collaboration with unlikely individuals. This system allows participants to see that they can indeed learn lessons from everyone around them and at times all that is needed is the opportunity to deepen without distractions. The Retreats provide an opportunity to remove the distractions of everyday life and foster camaraderie in a safe space, off the main island of Bermuda. We encourage participants to unplug from their cell phones and the worries of daily living and give in to a totally creative weekend. Space is limited for this special event and we are inviting participants to take part in a journey along with roughly 40 participants for this tremendous, life-changing personal adventure. Participants depart from the dock on Friday evening at 6 PM and are returned to the mainland on Sunday evening at 2pm.
Guest Participant Facilitators
To enhance the Retreat experience we will be inviting guest facilitators from around the world to join us. The first Retreat for 2012 will welcome international presenter, Danya Steele to the Winter Retreat. She is an author, entrepreneur, speaker and change agent. She has worked with a number of organizations focused on youth development and will present a Break-Out Session on the intrinsic ability each of us have to create our world by doing. During her time in Bermuda she will also be presenting to students at both Berkeley and CedarBridge and will share a bit on lessons she has learned on her life’s journey. We are very excited to include Danya, as she has done a lot of work in the United States and South Africa with the aim of breaking down barriers and bringing communities together and has valuable insight that can enhance the way we move forward in our lives. More information on Danya Steele is available here. If you have suggestions for potential participant facilitators please let us know and we will do our best to make it happen. Stay tuned as we let you know about the Summer and Fall Guest Participant Facilitators.

Bakatown Short Film Festival
The Chewstick Foundation in its commitment to breaking down social barriers and celebrating storytelling in all its forms will be holding their 1st Annual Bakatown Short Film Festival starting Thursday, January 26th and continuing through to Saturday, January 28th. The 1st edition of the Bakatown Film Festival promises to be one of the best ever, as Chewstick will host a series of events celebrating local film culture, storytelling and production, culminating with a showing of short films from around the world, screened at Liberty Theatre on Saturday, January 28th. This is a project developed in conjunction with the Future Shorts Film Festival based in England. The Future Shorts Festival allows anyone, anywhere to host a screening of the Future Shorts programme – a feature length programme of the award winning short films from around the world.
The Bakatown Short Film Festival is a celebration of the art of film making. It encourages and supports independent filmmakers from Bermuda and around the world, by bringing to Bermuda a dazzling array of short films from a select group of directors. The Bakatown Short Film Festival promotes understanding of diverse cultures by displaying the passions and unique vision of these filmmakers, and promises to both entertain and educate viewers. The Chewstick Foundation is very happy to have received sponsorship from the Economic Empowerment Zones Agency and Digicel whose support is graciously appreciated as we collaborate to revitalize the Bakatown area and dispel the misinformation that challenges its vitality. Gavin Djata Smith, Executive Director of The Chewstick Foundation explains that “Apart from Chewstick’s primary aim to be an avenue for personal growth, our secondary aim is to be a positive force in Bermuda generally and “Back of Town” specifically; constantly embedding our youth, arts, cultural and community programs in the heart of this region. In this vein we are proud to re-envision this area by embracing the “Back of Town” legacy and reintroducing it as “Bakatown”; to both celebrate the deep cultural history of the area while at the same time marking a new chapter in its history as a revitalized center of Bermudian history, culture and pride. The Bakatown Short Film Festival is our first introduction of the theme that we aim to be a major game changer for the North Hamilton Community and Bermuda as a whole. And Future Shorts creates a unique opportunity to embark on this new path”.
Future Shorts (www.futureshorts.com) is the largest short film network in the world, since 2003 they have worked to develop a platform for filmmakers to engage people from across the globe, through film. Future Shorts is an amazing company whose pop up film festival, The Future Shorts Festival is the largest of its kind; the goal is to encourage an international screening network to show films that cross, cultural and geographic boundaries, to create a global community. The Chewstick Foundation are honored to have become part of this network and to have found a partner organization to help The Chewstick Movement change the world, break down barriers, and celebrate and empower storytelling in all its forms. Thanks to the generous sponsorship of the Economic Empowerment Zones Agency we are able to hold the festival events free of charge with the exception of the Liberty Theatre Future Shorts screening, which will be $30 (20$ for Chewstick Members).
The Bakatown Short Film Festival will take place over three days starting on at The Chewstick Neo-Griot Lounge on Thursday, January 26 at 6pm with a screening of local submissions followed by a discussion on the filmmaking industry in Bermuda. Panelists include local filmmakers Al Seymour, Milton Raposo and Donald ‘Detrimental’ Robinson, also Asha Ludwig, director of one of the films submitted will participate. This event will provide an opportunity for filmmakers to network, inform and inspire each other about their passion. This is an free event that will also be streamed live and archived at www.chewstick.org. Panelists will share their experiences and perspectives on the history and future of film in Bermuda and this will be a great opportunity to ask questions of icons in Bermudian filmmaking, with decades of experience and a plethora of knowledge for those interested in the industry.
The second event will take place on Friday, January 27th at 9pm, with a Local Music Video Launch Party at The Chewstick Lounge. This novel event will showcase local artists and music video filmmakers in a celebration of music video filmmaking, which has become the most prolific of the filmmaking industry in Bermuda. The entire party will be entertained via video DJ with local music videos being projected 12ft x 8ft on the new screen at The Chewstick Lounge. The Music Video Launch party will feature music videos from local artists such as; Twanee’ Butterfield, Prof-A-C, Jelani, Fiyah Marshall, all the way up to international local artists like Heather Nova, Collie Buddz and Mishka! Entry is free and local artists are encouraged to attend to see their video on the big screen. Snacks and refreshments will be available with donation graciously accepted to support The Chewstick Foundation.
On Saturday, January 28th will be the main event, featuring the Future Shorts Films at Liberty Theatre, this will be a 250 person event, screening the world class Future Shorts (www.futureshorts.com) collection of film shorts. There will be an opening reception to kick-off the event which will take place from 6pm in the Liberty Theatre Lobby and will feature a selection of local performers and cocktails and refreshments for sale and a chance to mingle with fellow film enthusiasts. At 7pm the shorts will start in the main theatre. The collection is a series of six films that range from 6-20 minutes and display genres from real life dramas to stop-motion, and animation. Each film has received industry awards and the collection boasts winners from The Oscars, SXSW, BAFTA and the Sundance Film Festival to name a few. The relatively new Future Shorts Film Festival has made great strides at celebrating the short film medium around the world and we are proud to be listed as one of the host countries and the first in the Caribbean region to partner with Future Shorts. Please click here for further details on the individual Shorts.
The screening will end at about 9pm and will be followed by a wrap party at The Chewstick Lounge, where guests will have a chance to mingle with filmmakers, event organizers, and volunteers as they dance to the musical stylings of an array of hot fire dj’s, with inspiring visuals on the big screen while celebrating local culture and storytelling in Bakatown. This will be an amazing opportunity to experience the best that Bakatown has to offer, and lends itself to The Chewstick Foundation’s endeavors to recognize yet another facet of the tremendous stories we all have to share as citizens of the world. Entry to the wrap party is free thanks to the sponsorship of the EEZA. Please call the Chewstick Foundation at 292-2439 if you have questions or would like to volunteer for this epic event.
Tickets for the 1st Annual Bakatown Short Film Festival Liberty Theatre event (all other events are free) will be sold for $30 and are available at The Chewstick Headquarters on Court Street, www.premiertickets.bm or by contacting Chewstick at 292 2439 or emailing info@chewstick.org. CALLING ALL: writers, readers, part-time philosophers and sit-off sages! It ain’t wrong to write with us!
Since the launch of the new chewstick.org almost a month ago, we’ve gotten an incredible response from people of all sorts and from all over the world – letting us know that they are really vibing the new website. We couldn’t be more proud and happy that it’s proving itself a resource worthy of 4 minutes and 41 seconds of your casual internet surfing. (We know this because of Google analytics ; ) That said, we are working hard to keep it updated with informative, relevant and entertaining content that will enrich your life (and the world), but we really want your input and insight. Our hopes for chewstick.org is for it to become a community soap-box for sharing stories from real people about things that effect them, inspire them or even enrage them. We are trying to stay away from “party-politics” as this can get too combative, polarizing and down-right bloody. But everything else is pretty much fair game. So what kind of story makes a good article? Who knows! Maybe it’s something that irks you, an interesting debate you constantly have with your bredrins or a tale of something that changed your life. Share it! And if you’re not sure or want some help, let us know. We are developing a network of editors to help emerging writers develop their voice as well as to ensure that the overall content maintains a high-quality standard. This is an open-call to join the roster of contributors to help make chewstick.org the storyteller of the people – join us!
Here are some guidelines for creating/sharing your story with Chewstick:
1. Write from your perspective, speak from the heart.
2. Truth is better than fiction.
3. Remember: beginning, middle and end.
4. Let someone you know read it for feedback before we get it.
5. Articles will be edited and revisions may be requested.
6. Avoid personal attacks and keep in mind that our comments are open for anyone to reply.
7. Think of an accompanying picture concept.
8. If you’re using outside information or sources, be sure to include where you got them from.
9. Leave the audience wanting to contribute to the discussion.
10. Keep it short and sweet.
The technical side:
1. For a funky unique avatar image sign-up to gravatar
2. Simple submission: submit your article by email to submissions@chewstick.org
3. A little more effort/time: request a chewstick.org contributor account at submissions@chewstick.org
What does Chewstick do?
We sometimes get the question- what does Chewstick actually do? It seems that despite our constant movement throughout the Bermudian community, The Chewstick Foundation is often still known as only a poetry night or an open mic. While Chewstick still does both of these things, we are also committed to providing a positive impact on the community. For the most comprehensive answer to the question, check out the Foundation section of the website. But, if you want the quick and dirty explanation, check out this awesome video made by Chewstick’s own Camera Carrol Wilson. Big up, ace girl!
Local Music Videos
The music video, like many of the entertainment bastions, has become democratized due to huge strides in technology, creativity and a reduction in cost of equipment. In my 30 sumpin lifetime alone I’ve seen the invention of HD, its outrageously expensive availability (talking $10,000 for a camera easy), and evolution to HD webcams for under $100. The Flip, GoPro, and Rebel have made quality HD video production available for between $100 and $550, well within reach of the average consumer. This massive shift alongside freeware like iMovie (which ships with every Apple), cheapware like Shave (under $10) to industry standard Final Cut (for less than $300) means that everyone can explore their inner Spike Lee with just a couple bucks and a whole lot of heart. In addition syndication has become increasingly irrelevant as social media like YouTube, Myspace, Facebook etc. have enabled artists to share their content directly with their fans, meaning the Networks don’t have to stop to make the video available – matter of fact who watches TV anymore anyway?
What this means for the music video is that what was once available only to super-star artists is now available to everyone that is aspiring for a career as a recording artist and has resulted in a massive upsurge in local music videos. Now don’t get it twisted this does not equate to quality productions on par with Thriller, but it does equate to volume. This is where the quality is getting increasingly awesome, as amateurs are seeing more and more what is possible and pushing each other to new heights.
The future looks bright for this exciting new medium and every week there seems to be a new video to experience. Here is our collection of local videos that deserve at least a cursory glance during your trolling through the internet for the latest filth flarn filth ; ) We update it often so be sure to keep checking back for the latest videos and remember, even if the videos are so-so, the music is usually pretty solid, so if ya not into the visuals, just let the playlist run and enjoy the big tune! Also, if you have a video you would like us to add send us the link to info@chewstick.org.
PS – a special shout out to Detrimental, Shawny Boy and Shane Woodley for keeping the steady stream of videos, ya definitely raising the bar!

ChewSLAM
ChewSLAM is back! We are excited to relaunch this amazing, transformative program that has been piloted for the last two years and has been lead by local poetry luminaries such as Tiffany Paynter, Chris Astwood and Stephan Johnstone. ChewSLAM is a weekly program where participants are given the opportunity to deepen in their writing, performance and even recording skills. It is designed to help develop public speaking, community consciousness, collaboration and literacy, and most of all encourages young people to speak up about the things that matter to them most and to know that they are not alone. Chewstick strives to provide healthier ways for young people to express feelings of fear, love, loss and triumph, while building lasting friendships and surprising themselves with the beauty and power within – and this program is our offering to do just that.
This term participants will be gearing up for a series of workshops, exercises and performance opportunities leading up to an amazing international poetry experience. In addition to the program’s focus on building self-esteem and artistic expression, the youth will showcase their talents in special shows and community outreach in preparation for Bermuda’s first ever international SLAM poetry team. The focus is on preparing for the 2012 Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Slam Conference, an annual conference that takes place in California which sees young poets from all over the world come together to share and deepen in the shared love of spokenword, camaraderie and competition.
Additionally, for the first time ChewSLAM will be able to count toward The Department of Education minimum graduation requirement of 20hrs Co-Curricular Hours. This is a new requirement that we are excited to be able to assist The Department with and will no doubt be a fun and exciting option to fulfill this requirement. Young people not only get the benefit of being involved in the Program but also it will count toward their formal educational experience and requirements – that is a win-win.

The Breakfast League offers an ideal opportunity to model the expanding Chewstick sports aspirations as there are no practices, rolling subs and an open-door policy for participation (yes, ladies are welcome) – so if you feel like a kick, or have a youngster in your life that could use some positive male influences, join us on a Sunday morning!

Triumphant Return
Chew FC 6
International 3
The quest for Breakfast league glory began on Sunday at Shelly bay with the mighty Chew FC opening their 2011-2012 campaign with a win at Shelly bay. Fresh from a practice match drubbing at the hands of newly named Flanagan’s Onions (oddly enough there were no Bermuda onions on that team) the Chew FC soldiers took to the field in search of their first 3 points. Matches with international have always been highly contested and this day would prove no different despite Chew FC dominating proceedings for much of the match.
Chewstick orange men settled quickly and soon after we started putting passes together we were rewarded. A bizarre goalkeeping error saw a stray cross trickle along the goal line. Chris got to the ball first rounded the keeper and placed the ball on goal only to see Lloyd holder steal in and steal the goal with a quick tap-in. The second goal was equally fortuitous as the keeper scuffed a clearance into Lloyd’s path and he easily slotted home into the open net. Chris added a third and we were unlucky to score more as the International defense had no answer to Cat’s pace and he should have converted one of the many opportunities he had through on the now ‘replacement’ keeper.
At halftime we agreed we needed more of the same attacking spirit and more goals. Despite being 3-0 up, we managed to let Inter back into the game. They definitely brought the game to us, and it wasn’t long until they breached the Chew FC defense. The worked the ball around to the youngest member on the team, he was afforded too much space on the edge of the box and he unleashed a thunderous shot straight at Djata in the Chewstick goal. Despite being well positioned the shot powered through the keepers gloves and into the back of the net. The Inter attack continued and minutes later they were in behind our defense, Djata committed but when he was rounded just inside the box the inter striker passed the ball into the net just inside the near post. The pressure mounted and inter got a third goal with team Stalwart Mike Johnston volleying home at the back post…Where was the Chew FC Left back?
3-3 now and this was becoming the game we expected from Inter, and finally we started to play some football; linking up to put Chris and Hosang into the box. The turning point for the attack came from the defense though, Inter found a through ball to their striker on the counter attack and he dropped like a sack of potatoes when challenged shoulder to shoulder in the box. The referee blew for a penalty, up stepped Kemo Sabe, Lone ranger music played in the background, Djata settled into his position, the ref blew, Sabe approached and tried to cheekily send the keeper the wrong way, but his shot was saved well as Djata got down low to prevent inter taking the lead.
The game was turned on a head and what happened next was a stroke of magic. The Chew FC attack pushed and probed and the breakthrough came after the ball bounced around the box a bit and a blocked shot looked to be rebounding beyond Somner who reflexively stuck a leg out and his touch looped the ball into the top left corner with the keeper stunned and the rest of us pretty surprised as well. Our lead now reestablished we began to take control of the match and the front men were getting into good positions. Somner was the catalyst for the 5th goal as he drove into the box. He just pushed the ball beyond the inter defender and he drew just enough contact to drop as the defender extended his leg. On a hattrick now and having already stolen one goal on the day, Lloyd holder stepped up to take the penalty and sent the keeper the wrong way to close out his hattrick. Super sub Cat finished off the game running the Inter backline ragged, he scored the sixth goal intercepting a back-pass and duly rounding the replacement replacement inter keeper and slamming the ball home.
This week the boys in orange face another league title contender in Equalisers on the artificial surface at BFA field at 10am.
T.W.I.G.S. – Youth Open-Mic Jam Session
T.W.I.G.S., a monthly youth open-mic jam session, will take place for the first time this Saturday, November 12th from 6pm-10pm, at the Chewstick Neo-Griot Lounge & Cafe’ on the corner of Elliot Street and Court Street. This program will take place on the second Saturday of every month, and will give creative young people, under the age of eighteen, a chance to showcase their talents in the same format as Chewstick’s legendary Sunday night open-mic jam sessions. T.W.I.G.S., an acronym for “True Wisdom in Growing Souls” is meant to empower Bermuda’s youngest artists to take ownership of their talents, and give them a positive social outlet that can help them to grow and connect with each other. A youth team coordinated by staff at the Chewstick Foundation, will produce an evening that is focused on celebrating the talents, accomplishments and skills of their peers.
The first T.W.I.G.S. evening will be hosted by Kevina-Lorae’ Davis an amazing young lady who has not only been a tremendous volunteer for The Chewstick Foundation, but is also one of the enterprising young people that took part in Troika’s production of “Misunderstood” over the summer. She will be flanked by a number of artistic teens including, singer and songwriter Emma Keane, dancers The Bermuda Squad, rappers Tha Infamous Nerdz, Haz, and even local superstar Jelani. Each of these young people is moving forward making their individual mark on the world scene of self-expression via social media, online music outlets and collaborations with friends and local bands, but they rarely get to share those talents live, and certainly not in a space as purpose-built as the increasingly influential Chewstick facility.
For those that are interested in performing, there will be a book to sign-up as you enter in typical Chewstick style, but you are warned to get there early if you wish to do so. There is a dedicated backline (drums, keyboard, bass and guitar amps) at the fully equipped Chewstick lounge, and youth are encouraged to bring their tracks, guitars or whatever they need to shine. And with the projectors, smoke machine and stage lights – they will indeed shine.
T.W.I.G.S. is free, soft drinks and snacks will be available for purchase, and donations toward the Chewstick Foundation’s programs and infrastructure would be much appreciated. Adults are encouraged to attend – but only if accompanied by a young person in their lives. Each and every young person is welcomed to attend on the second Saturday of every month at the Chewstick Neo-Griot Lounge & Cafe’ on the corner of Court Street and Elliot Street. T.W.I.G.S. will start at 6:00 pm and is scheduled to end at 10:00 p.m. The aim of the night is to give Bermuda’s young people a chance to share their voice and give them an opportunity to socialize in a positive, constructive environment. T.W.I.G.S. upcoming dates are November 12th and December 10th, of 2011 and January 14th will kick off 2012. For further information call 292-2439 or e-mail info@chewstick.org.
The Chewstick 9th Anniversary Fundraiser Celebration
The Chewstick Foundation will be holding the 9th Anniversary Celebration Fundraiser on January 7, 2012 at the City Hall Theatre in Hamilton. The 9th Anniversary Celebration will be Chewstick’s first attempt at making the Anniversary a much needed fundraising event, complete with welcome reception, huge artist showcase, art auction and ability to donate to support this increasingly influential charity. The Chewstick Foundation works to not only highlight Bermudian talent and bring people from all walks of life together, but to aid in the cultivation of a distinctly Bermudian story that can serve to increase our Bermuda’s global awareness, local pride and focus on breaking down the social barriers that only serve to stifle our collective growth.
We are pleased to have Premier The Honourable Paula A. Cox, JP, MP, Minister of Finance as our distinguished patron this year.
Celebrations will begin with an opening reception in the City Hall Foyer from 7pm. At 8pm the audience will be ushered into the the City Hall Theatre for a showcase to highlight Chewstick’s bright, accomplished. dynamic and promising talents. An eclectic mix of dance, poetry, storytelling, rapping, and musical interludes has been compiled that is guaranteed to please everyone! After the show Gombeys will engage the crowd and lead the way back to the Chewstick facility on the corner of Elliot Street and Court Street for after-party vibes where the djs will takeover and the dancing will begin.
We are pleased and excited to have Premier The Honourable Paula A. Cox as our distinguished patron this year and hope that many others will join her in helping to support The Chewstick Foundation. To that end it is important to mention the incredible artists, storytellers and volunteers that are donating their time and talents to make this show possible. There are too many to mention here, but there is no doubt that this will be a show to remember, and will go a long way in helping to keep the Chewstick progams, initiatives and facility alive.
The Chewstick facility was purpose-built to permanently house programs that empower storytellers, artists and social justice in a way that enriches youth, arts, culture and community and ultimately become Bermuda’s premier destination for live entertainment, local culture and community development. The Chewstick Foundation has been going strong these past nine years, due largely to the support of those who believe in the Movement and the community it has been established to support. The Chewstick Foundation continues to inspire diverse individuals to share their stories artistically and provide a sanctuary of hope and inspiration in these dark times. Come to support this worthy cause, celebrate the 9th Chewversary and help further Chewstick’s endeavours to enrich our island home.
Tickets for the 9th Anniversary Celebrations will be sold for $30 (General) and $100 (Patron) and are available between 9am to 5pm at Kit & Caboodle, Rock Island Coffee, The Chewstick Headquarters on Court Street, or by contacting Chewstick at 292 2439 or emailing info@chewstick.org. Tickets and donations can also be made online at www.premiertickets.bm

CALLING ALL FILMMAKERS!

Chewstick has always been about empowering storytellers, artists and social justice, and in that vein we have always been associated with various forms of entertainment and public dialogue, however there is one medium that has seldom gotten the support it deserves, both generally and through the work of The Foundation. That medium is film. This is a hard industry to fully support on a local level because let’s face it, it takes a ton of time and money to make a film and generally there aren’t many people into it to take it to a high level. Or is it? Making movies has become cheaper and easier than ever, and locally film-making has seen a renaissance of sorts with anyone with a Flip and an iBook making their bffs music video and getting thousands of views on YouTube or Vimeo. The short-form film is making a run for creating a local film industry, showing all manner of local culture and lifestyle and telling a truly unique story that is increasingly essential to fortifying national identity and pride. The Chewstick Foundation wants to do its part to stoke the creative fire and has teamed up with international short film festival organization “Future Shorts” to create an incredible local short film festival called “The Bakatown Short Film Festival”. Details will be forthcoming on the full Festival weekend however the call is being made now to get as many local shorts together as possible to be a part of the event.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences defines the short film as “an original motion picture that has a running time of 40 minutes or less, including all credits.” If that’s good enough for the Oscars then it’s definitely good enough for us. We are asking for submissions to be made no later than January 18th 2012 and apologize for the urgency and quick turnaround. Unfortunately, we only recently found out about the FutureShorts opportunity and to be a part of the FutureShorts network of screenings the local showing must take place before Jan. 31st 2012. But don’t fret, this is the 1st Annual, and you’ll have a full year to prep for next year to submit ; ) Check out the submission requirements below for further details on submitting your work and mark the dates January 26-28, 2012 for a film festival like no other.
Submission Guidelines:
- Must be an original motion picture that has a running time of 40 minutes or less, including all credits.
- Can be submitted on DVD, CD, USB, or web link, however if accepted into The Festival a DVD copy must be provided.
- Any topic, genre, or technique (animation, CG, music video etc.) can be submitted.
- All films must have a rating no higher than R
- Submissions will be reviewed by a volunteer Festival Review Committee and will be accepted based on engaging storytelling, originality and overall production quality.
- Submissions are due no later than Wednesday, January 18th 2012, by 5pm.
